Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has revealed how his knowledge of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush helped him save their penalties during the shootout victory over Egypt on Saturday evening.
Nwabali produced a stunning performance as Nigeria defeated the Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties after regulation time ended goalless, denying both Salah and Marmoush from the spot.
Speaking after the match, the Chippa United captain admitted that while he did not specifically study their penalties, his familiarity with the players from watching them for their clubs played a key role.
“Mohamed Salah is one of the greatest players in Africa, probably in the World,” Nwabali said.
“Talking about Marmoush, I do watch them, not like I watch their penalties, I watch them play for their clubs.”
The Super Eagles goalkeeper described saving their penalties as a personal target and a defining moment in his career.
“I feel like it is going to be my greatest moment to save these guys penalties,” he revealed.
“It is just my target in this penalty shootout because saving Mohamed Salah's penalty is a boost for me. I feel like it is a boost for me.”
His heroics earned him the Man of the Match (MOTM) award and helped him finish the tournament on a strong note.
Nwabali conceded just four goals and recorded four clean sheets, without conceding any goals in the knockout phase.
