Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has revealed that Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a hamstring injury, ruling him out of their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

Awoniyi, who has battled for consistent minutes this season due to the strong form of Chris Wood, had begun featuring more regularly following Wood’s injury during the international break.

However, despite increased playing time, the Super Eagles forward has struggled to make an impact, failing to score or provide an assist across all competitions.

His attempt to regain form took another hit during preparations for the Villa clash, as he picked up a hamstring issue.

Awoniyi was not included in the matchday squad, with manager Nuno expressing uncertainty over the timeline for his return.

Speaking to Sky Sports UK, Nuno expressed concern over the severity of Awoniyi’s injury, admitting he is unsure when the striker will be fit to return.

“I don't know [when they'll be back]. It's going to be day to day. He [Taiwo Awoniyi] felt something in his hamstring," Nuno Espírito Santo said after the defeat to Aston Villa. 

The injury is another setback for the 27-year-old, who had hoped to use this period to impress Nuno and push for a more permanent starting role.

His recent dip in form already cost him a place in the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

Awoniyi will now focus on recovery, with hopes of regaining fitness and form ahead of Nigeria’s four-nation tournament scheduled for June.
