Chibuike Nwaiwu has revealed that he believes he is being monitored by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle for a possible national team invitation, while reflecting on his move to Trabzonspor and the support he received from compatriot Paul Onuachu before joining the Turkish club.
The 22-year-old centre-back joined Trabzonspor during the mid-season transfer window and has since been settling into life in the Turkish league, where he hopes to leave a lasting impression on supporters while continuing his development as a player.
Speaking in an interview with Trabzonspor Magazine about his international ambitions, Nwaiwu stated that he remains focused on improving his performances while trusting that opportunities will come.
“I believe in myself and in God. I know they are watching me regarding the national team. Whether they invite me or not is up to them, but I will continue to work to reach the top,” he said, as quoted by Yenisafak.
“But even if they don't invite me, I will continue to fight and work hard to reach the top
“Every player dreams of winning trophies with their country, and I believe Trabzonspor will provide me with the platform to represent my country at the highest level.”
The defender also discussed his playing style, describing himself as an aggressive but disciplined defender who prefers a safe and solid approach. He credited his early coaches in Nigeria for shaping his versatility.
“I would describe myself as a very aggressive and fearless player. I don't like taking risks on the pitch. I prefer to play a safe and solid game. I like winning the ball.
“My coaches in Nigeria, Finidi George and Koc Yem, taught me how to play both as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder. Perhaps this characteristic helped me progress,” he added.
Nwaiwu also spoke about Onuachu’s influence on his career decision, revealing that he was surprised when the striker replied to his social media message seeking advice.
He said Onuachu spoke highly of the club’s culture, city lifestyle, and passionate fanbase, which helped convince him to make the move.
Nwaiwu recently delivered a standout display for Trabzonspor before suffering an injury, scoring twice in a 3–1 victory over Fatih Karagümrük before being forced off the pitch.
Medical examinations later revealed bleeding and edema in the inner thigh muscle of his left leg, with treatment already underway.
