New Aberdeen signing Afeez Aremu has expressed his admiration for football legend Sir Alex Ferguson, reflecting on the former manager’s celebrated days at both Aberdeen and Manchester United.
On Thursday, Aberdeen confirmed the signing of the former Flying Eagles midfielder on a permanent transfer from German second tier club 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Aremu put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at the Dons until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
During Ferguson's tenure in the Aberdeen dugout, the club secured three league titles, four Scottish Cups, a Scottish League Cup, as well as the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup.
In one of the most unforgettable moments in the club's history, Aberdeen overcame Real Madrid after extra time to lift the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup, etching their name into European football folklore.
Ferguson transformed Manchester United into a global powerhouse, winning 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, two UEFA Champions League trophies, and numerous other domestic and international honours during his 27-year tenure from 1986 to 2013.
Speaking to RedTV, Aremu stated: "Alex Ferguson won a lot of trophies for Aberdeen, beating Real Madrid, which was so crazy. Of course I like Alex Ferguson.
"I like Alex Ferguson when he was coaching at Manchester United, so that's a little thing I know about Aberdeen. For sure, everybody in Aberdeen will never forget these memories."
Aremu is the second Nigerian player signed by Aberdeen in the January transfer window, after forward Toyosi Olusanya, who joined on loan from Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo until the end of the 2025-2026 season.
