Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has declared his readiness to play as a goalkeeper if called upon, even as he maintains that his preferred position remains at centre back.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco, the Nantes star emphasized his versatility across the defensive line and his commitment to doing whatever the coach requires.
Awaziem, who has been a mainstay in Nigeria’s defence in recent years, is widely recognized as a centre back.
However, his career has seen him deployed across the back four in various formations, allowing him to gain valuable experience in multiple defensive roles.
This adaptability has made him a key option for both his club, Nantes, and the national team, as managers can rely on him to fill gaps wherever needed.
Reflecting on his positional flexibility, Awaziem told Elegbete TV that he approaches each assignment with a focus on performance and team objectives.
“I mean for me, I’ve played a different position in the back. It depends on the structure of the coach. It depends on where the coach wants me to perform.
“I just go there and just try to do the job as possible as I can,” he explained, highlighting his professional mindset.
The 28-year-old also expressed his willingness to go beyond traditional defensive duties if required by the team.
“So, I just try to do my best, you know, do everything possible to help the team, help myself as well.
“So, if the coach wants me to be a goalkeeper, I’m ready. If he wants me to be a striker, I’m ready,” Awaziem added, demonstrating his commitment to putting the team’s needs first.
Despite this readiness for any role, Awaziem was clear about his main preference, emphasizing his natural position at the heart of Nigeria’s defence.
“But my preferred position right now today as I’m speaking to you, I’m a center back, you know. So, I would prefer to remain in my position, center back,” he stated, reinforcing his confidence and experience in the role.
The Super Eagles will begin their group phase campaign on Tuesday, December 23, against Tanzania, before facing Tunisia and Uganda.
