'It won't be my first mistake' - Wrexham GK who recently switched nationality to Nigeria says

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who recently switched his international allegiance to Nigeria, has expressed his delight following a standout performance that helped his side secure a dramatic FA Cup victory over Premier League club Nottingham Forest.

Reflecting on a recent error in Wrexham’s league fixture against Swansea City, Okonkwo told BBC Sport Wales, “Mistakes are normal in football, it's all about how you react all the time. It won't be my first and won't be my last probably. It's all about looking on to the next one and I'm just happy I could make the difference again.”

Okonkwo proved decisive in Wrexham’s 4-3 penalty shootout win after a thrilling 3-3 draw following extra time, saving penalties from Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson to help manager Phil Parkinson’s side advance in the competition.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper now adds to the growing depth of Nigeria’s goalkeeping options.

The Super Eagles’ current chart is led by Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali and also includes Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye, and teenage star Ebenezer Harcourt.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo represented England at youth levels, featuring for the U15, U16, U17, and U18 teams between 2015 and 2018, with his last appearance for England’s U18 side in 2019.

He had not been called up to any senior squads since, making his switch to Nigeria a fresh opportunity to contribute at senior international level.

Okonkwo’s recent nationality change now makes him eligible to represent Nigeria, potentially strengthening the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping ranks ahead of upcoming competitions.
