'It's football' - Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi responds to Super Eagles players and fans over officiating

Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi has reacted to the backlash that followed his officiating during the AFCON semifinal clash between Nigeria and Morocco on Wednesday night in Rabat.

The Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to the host nation, following a goalless draw after regulation time and extra time.

However, the outcome of the contest sparked widespread criticism from Nigerian fans and members of the team, many of whom questioned several decisions taken by the centre referee.

The Nigerian fans accused Daniel Nii Ayi of favouring Morocco with key calls during the crucial encounter.

Some fans also criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for appointing a Ghanaian official for the match, citing regional rivalry involving Nigeria and Ghana.

Super Eagles players Akor Adams Bright Osayi-Samuel was among those who openly voiced his displeasure, with the fullback claiming the referee made a number of incorrect decisions that affected the flow and outcome of the game.

Reacting to the criticism in a chance meeting with Sporty TV pundit Klinton, Daniel Nii Ayi played down the backlash, insisting such reactions are part of football.

"No, it's okay. It's football,” the Ghanaian referee said when asked about the criticism surrounding his performance in the semifinal clash.

Nigeria’s defeat ended their hopes of securing a fourth AFCON title. The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they face Egypt in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
