'I've the impression it's being played in Lagos, Nigeria' - Three-time Afcon winner condemns booing of Egypt

Retired Egypt international and three-time Africa Cup of Nations winner Wael Gomaa was baffled by the behaviour of the fans during the third place playoff between the Pharaohs and Super Eagles on Saturday evening.

Nigeria finished on the podium after defeating the record champions 4-2 on penalties to claim the bronze medal, with Ademola Lookman converting the decisive spot kick.

A goalless draw in regulation time forced the game to penalties, and it was goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali who stole the spotlight, producing crucial saves against Premier League stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.

Gomaa was frustrated at the atmosphere inside the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca, where the encounter was staged.

"You said the match was taking place at the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca? I have the impression it's being played in Lagos, Nigeria," he said on beIN SPORTS

The former Al Ahly and Egypt stalwart went on to describe the situation as deeply troubling, particularly the reaction from sections of the crowd during moments traditionally regarded as sacrosanct in international football.

"Given what's happening in the stands, with the booing during the Egyptian national anthem and every time the ball is touched, we've honestly reached a difficult stage."

The Super Eagles have claimed victory in all eight Afcon third place matches they have contested, setting a record no other nation has achieved.
