Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has completed more line-breaking passes than any other player at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, according to the statisticians at Opta.
Iwobi has completed a total of 36 line-breaking passes in the knockout stages of Afcon 2025, the highest figure recorded by any player at this phase of the competition.
The breakdown of his tally shows 22 line-breaking passes in Nigeria’s Round of 16 match against Mozambique and a further 14 in the quarter-final encounter with Algeria.
The Fulham midfielder was involved in Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Mozambique, where his passing from midfield contributed to the team’s ability to progress the ball through central areas.
His involvement in advancing play featured prominently as the Super Eagles moved into the quarter-final stage.
Earlier in the tournament, Iwobi provided two assists in Nigeria’s opening group-stage win over Tanzania.
Against Algeria, the Hale End Academy graduate reached a milestone that will be remembered, equaling a Nigerian record jointly held by former Afcon winners Austin Okocha, Muda Lawal and John Obi Mikel.
Among Nigerian midfielders in Africa Cup of Nations history, Iwobi, Okocha, Mikel and Lawal share the record for the most appearances, with 22 matches each.
Iwobi is set to claim the record outright in a matter of days, with his Afcon appearances rising to 23 across four tournaments should he feature in Nigeria's semifinal clash against Morocco's Atlas Lions.
Iwobi played seven matches each at Afcon 2019 and Afcon 2023, and four matches each at Afcon 2021 and Afcon 2025.
