The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has revealed that there are currently no plans to open contract extension discussions with Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, despite the team’s recent outing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025, recently guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the just-concluded AFCON tournament in Morocco.
The Super Eagles secured the bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the third-place playoff.
However, speculation has emerged over the future of the Malian tactician, with reports suggesting uncertainty surrounding his position following Nigeria’s failure to reach the final of the competition.
In an interview with Osasu Obayiuwana, Gusau explained that the federation remained comfortable with the existing agreement, stressing that Chelle is still midway through his tenure.
“There will be no contract extension discussion with Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles head coach, for now,” he said.
“We signed a two-year deal with him in January 2025. He is only halfway through his contract. In the last six months of his current deal, we can start to look at things.”
Following the conclusion of the AFCON tournament, Chelle is expected to turn his attention to upcoming competitive fixtures, with the task of ensuring the Super Eagles qualify for the next AFCON and mount a stronger title challenge.
