Chelsea Hail Mikel For Most Commanding Display In Rio, Aminu And Sadiq Umar
Published: August 21, 2016
Once again, English Premier League club Chelsea have showered praise on influential Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel following his outstanding performance in the Dream Team’s 3-2 win over Honduras at the Olympic Games on Saturday.
The official website of the Blues noted that the number ten was involved in the build-up to Nigeria U23s three goals scored by Aminu Umar and Sadiq Umar(2), and kept the defense focused in the closing minutes while the opponents were searching for an equalizer.
“Mikel played a key role for his country in all three of their goals, which arrived in a 15-minute burst either side of the interval,” said Chelsea on their official website.
“He vindicated his offensive position after a chance-filled opening half-hour, finding Sadiq Umar at the far post for the young Roma striker to lash in his fourth goal of the competition.
“But Mikel made his Champions League-winning experience count in the dying minutes to keep the defence fully-focused, while the dynamic Umars took Nigeria to 11 goals at these Games and showed why they were one of the most exciting teams taking part in Brazil. ”
Mikel, 29, will return to Chelsea this week and will be hoping to make his 250th Premier League appearance next weekend against Burnley.
