'A big character' - Middlesbrough forward on Iheanacho's influence behind the scenes
Published: April 24, 2025
Middlesbrough forward Tommy Conway has offered an inside look at Kelechi Iheanacho’s influence in the dressing room, praising the Nigerian international’s leadership and positive attitude despite his on-pitch struggles.
Iheanacho, who joined Boro on loan from Sevilla during the winter transfer window, has found it difficult to hit top form on Teesside, managing just one goal and two assists since his arrival.
His performances have drawn criticism from sections of the Boro fanbase, with some supporters voicing their frustration during a recent defeat to Leeds United, where the 28-year-old was booed while being substituted.
However, speaking to Teesside Live after Boro’s victory over Plymouth, Conway defended his teammate, shedding light on the vital role Iheanacho plays behind the scenes.
"He’s been great Kel, from the moment he got here. What you guys and the fans don’t see, is the energy he brings in the dressing room every day. He’s always thinking positively, he’s always there to speak to and offer advice," Conway said.
"When you consider his experience and his time in the Premier League and what he’s achieved in the game, it’s amazing for someone like me to have. He’s a person you respect naturally. He’s a joy to play with, and he’s a joy to share the changing room with as well."
Iheanacho has become a key figure off the pitch, and Conway believes his influence is helping to keep the squad focused as Middlesbrough push for a Championship playoff spot with just two games remaining in the season.
"He’s a big character. From the day he walked in, he took to it like a duck to water, and everyone took to him as well.
"Credit to him for that, he’s really bought in. I hope he can have a big impact in the remaining games, as I believe he has done already.”
The former Leicester City striker, who missed Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March due to his poor form, will be aiming to finish the season strongly.
Iheanacho will hope to help Boro secure a playoff berth and possibly earn promotion to the Premier League, while also putting himself back in contention for a Super Eagles recall ahead of the Unity Cup in London this June.
