Nigerian teenager Josh Maja bagged a brace as Sunderland thrashed Southampton 3-0 in the Premier League 2 on Sunday afternoon.
In his first start of the season for the Black Cats, the 17-year-old scored his first goal after two minutes, firing from 12 yards after a loose ball had fallen to him, then doubled his team’s advantage with a header five minutes before the intermission.
The striker came off the bench in Sunderland’s U23s first two games of the new season, against Leicester City and Chelsea.
The highly-rated Josh Maja trained with the first team towards the end of last season after impressing the coach whilst playing for the U18s.
Born in London, the former Fulham, Crystal Palace and Manchester City youth-teamer has said that he will not reject a call-up to Nigeria’s youth teams .
Both Josh Maja and Southampton striker Olufela Olomola started and completed the game staged at Eppleton Colliery Football Ground (Hetton-le-Hole, Tyne and Wear).
