New Obi Mikel, Uwakwe Scores Brilliant Goal From 30 Yards As Chelsea Beat Liverpool
Published: April 29, 2017
Tariq Uwakwe scored a brilliant goal in Chelsea's hard-fought 1-0 win over Liverpool in an U18 Premier League encounter at the Academy Ground in Merseyside on Saturday afternoon.
Uwakwe, who has been touted as the New Obi Mikel, was named in the starting line-up along with Chelsea Academy poster boy Ike Ugbo, while Ibadan-born Netherlands youth-teamer Bobby Adekanye started for the home team.
The versatile midfielder gave Chelsea the lead in the fifth minute when his shot from 30-yards out took a wicked deflection past goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.
Ugbo thought he had doubled Chelsea's advantage when he fried home from a corner but it was disallowed for offside, before Uwakwe came close to grabbing his second with a volley.
Liverpool winger Adekanye had the best opportunity to equalize for his team in the second half but blazed his effort over the bar after meeting a cross.
Three days ago, Uwakwe and Ugbo helped Chelsea win the FA Youth Cup for the fourth year in a row, with the striker finding the net in the first half.
