Battle for La Liga U23 POTM: Omorodion faces competition from Man Utd loanee, Barca and Real Madrid stars
Published: February 21, 2024
Spanish-Nigerian striker Samu Omorodion has been nominated for the La Liga U23 Player of the Month for February 2024 following his impressive performances for Deportivo Alavés in the said month.
The talented forward is in contention with Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, and Real Betis' Johnny Cardoso for the award.
Omorodion has been in red-hot form in recent weeks, scoring in three consecutive La Liga games including a strike against defending champions Barcelona but has only scored twice this month.
He is set to face stern competition, particularly from Yamal who has bagged 2 goals and two assists in his last 3 games, and Camavinga who has excelled in the middle of the park for Real Madrid.
Omorodion has also been nominated alongside teammate Álex Sola for the Play of the Month which is given to the best build-up leading to a goal.
The duo combined for Alavés' only goal in their defeat to Barcelona with Sola swinging a cross with the outside of his boot which found the head of the unmarked Spanish youth international.
They will have to beat Vinicius Junior's beautiful build-up with Jude Bellingham for Real Madrid's second goal in their 4-0 thrashing of Girona and Gorka Guruzeta's assist for Yuri Berchiche during Athletic Bilbao's victory over Real Mallorca to the award.
Omorodion has hit double figures already for goal involvements in the Spanish top-flight having registered 9 goals and one assist.
