UCL: Osimhen kept at bay for 90 minutes as Barcelona cruise past Napoli to advance to last eight
Published: March 13, 2024
In a captivating game at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Tuesday night , Barcelona advanced to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League after a 3-1 win over Italian champions Napoli .
Victor Osimhen played the full game but could not add to his tally of two goals in this season's competition as he was kept in check by a Barcelona defence marshaled by Uruguay national teamer Ronald Araujo.
Within twenty seconds, the Nigeria international got in behind the Barcelona defence but teenage defender Cubarsí prevented a goalscoring opportunity with a tackle.
Fermín López (20y 306d) became the youngest Barcelona player to score in the knockout rounds of the Champions League since Ousmane Dembélé against Chelsea in March 2018 when he broke the deadlock in the fifteenth minute.
João Cancelo doubled the advantage almost immediately but Amir Rrahmani made the tie interesting when he pulled one back at the half hour mark.
In search of an equalizer, Napoli attempted to deliver several balls into the box as they aimed to capitalize on Osimhen's aerial prowess but the crosses came to nothing.
The Parthenopeans were still in the game until the 83rd minute when Robert Lewandowski extended Barcelona's lead from close range
.Having been knocked out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia, Napoli will now have to concentrate on the Serie A.
