Barcelona's Nigeria-eligible striker Lopez will not be cap-tied to Spain this month
Published: April 07, 2024Barcelona wonderkid Vicky López will still be eligible to represent the Nigeria national teams after the international break in April, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Spanish-Nigerian youngster made her senior debut for Spain in a Nations League semifinal tie with the Netherlands on February 23 before making another appearance against France in the final.
Despite playing in two competitive matches before earning a call-up for this month's 2025 European Women's Championship qualifiers, she was not cap-tied to her country of birth due to Fifa's eligibility rules.
Players with dual nationality under the age of 21 can only become cap-tied to a national team if they participate in four matches for their first country, and one of these games has to be a competitive fixture.
López was a non-playing substitute as world champions Spain thrashed Belgium 7-0 in a Euro qualifier on April 5.
It means the 17-year-old could still change her mind and play for the Super Falcons even if she is involved in Spain's next match against Czech Republic at the El Plantío Stadium on Tuesday, April 9.
She was leaning towards representing the Super Falcons at international level before she became provisionally cap-tied to Spain, but the Nigeria Football Federation were slow to act.
Madrid native López qualifies to represent the Super Falcons through her Nigerian mother.
