'It's a huge footballing nation' - Janne Andersson confirms he's in talks with NFF over Super Eagles job
Published: August 23, 2024
Experienced Swedish football tactician Janne Andersson has confirmed that he is in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation over the vacant Super Eagles job but underlined that nothing has been agreed at the moment.
The 61-year-old Janne Andersson is currently a free agent after leaving his role as Sweden coach in November 2023 after the Scandinavians failed to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.
Following Nigeria's disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Benin's Cheetahs, Finidi George resigned, leaving the Super Eagles without a permanent coach.
Prior to Finidi's resignation, the Executive Committee of the Nigerian Federation resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying matches.
Earlier this week, the Nigeria Football Federation clarified that Andersson has not been appointed as the new coach of the Super Eagles.
Commenting on reports linking him with the Super Eagles job, Andersson told Swedish newspaper Expressen: "It's a huge footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation.
"It's a huge footballing nation so I'm extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach.
"Dialogue is ongoing and I don't really want to say more than that. I have been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen in different ways. So we'll see what happens in the future."
A forward during his playing days, Janne Andersson, who previously managed Swedish clubs Halmstads BK, Örgryte IS and IFK Norrköping, has never coached a foreign team.
