Chelsea, Manchester United join Tottenham in race for Super Eagles-eligible defender
Published: November 04, 2024Two English Premier League clubs have joined the race to sign Lecce's Super Eagles-eligible defender Patrick Dorgu.
Football Insider's transfer correspondent Pete O'Rourke has reported that the left-back's performances have not gone unnoticed by top European clubs, with Manchester United and Chelsea joining Tottenham in the race for his signature.
Dorgu has emerged as a key target for the Premier League clubs ahead of the reopening of the transfer window because he has the ability to play in multiple positions on the pitch.
Predominantly a left-back, the Denmark international of Nigerian descent can also slot in at left wingback, right winger, right-back or right wingback if the need arises.
Manchester United have been linked with the dual-national player due to Luke Shaw's injury problems, while Tottenham are keen to add more depth to the defensive department.
Chelsea have been keeping tabs on Dorgu and considered him in the summer transfer window but a deal did not materialize.
Copenhagen native Dorgu has made three appearances for his country of birth, Denmark but remains eligible to play for Nigeria for the time being as he's an U21 player.
The 20-year-old had a dream debut for Denmark as he needed only 47 seconds to open his goalscoring account for the Scandinavians after coming off the bench in a UEFA Nations League fixture against Switzerland in September.
In ten appearances in the Italian top flight so far this season, all of which he started, he has scored two goals.
Dorgu joined Lecce from Nordsjælland youth academy in 2022 and has a contract with the Giallorossi until the end of the 2028-2029 season.
