2025 Afcon qualifier: Five key strategies for Eguavoen to avoid defeat against Rwanda

The Super Eagles prepare to face Rwanda's Wasps in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, having played out a barren draw at the first fixture in Kigali.

With qualification already secured courtesy of Libya's 1-0 win over Rwanda, Nigeria's focus shifts from securing passage to maintaining an unbeaten run as they round off the qualifiers.

However, Rwanda's desperation to keep their qualification hopes alive makes them a potentially hazardous opponent.

A victory against Nigeria, coupled with a favorable result in the other group match, could see Rwanda snatch a spot in the tournament.

Coach Torsten Spittler's side will be determined to pull off an upset and make a statement ahead of their World Cup meeting with Nigeria next year.

Nigeria's football fans, still basking in the euphoria of securing qualification, will be expecting a convincing victory against Rwanda.

Anything less than three points will be deemed unacceptable. The Super Eagles' interim manager must carefully consider his tactics to avoid a shocking defeat.

With the stakes high and expectations soaring, Eguavoen must get his strategy spot on. Here are five crucial strategies he must employ to ensure victory against Rwanda:

1. Start with a Strong Lineup

Eguavoen must field a formidable starting XI, featuring his best players, including Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi.

This will send a clear message to Rwanda that Nigeria is taking the match seriously.

A strong lineup will also provide the necessary firepower to break down Rwanda's defense and secure an early goal.

2. Neutralize Rwanda's Key Players

The Rwandan squad are not pushovers, therefore, they will definitely have players who can make things happen.

Eguavoen must instruct his players to closely mark these key opponents, limiting their space and opportunities to create scoring chances.

This will require discipline, organization, and effective communication among Nigeria's defenders.

3. Exploit Rwanda's Defensive Vulnerabilities

Rwanda's defense has shown vulnerability in previous matches, particularly against pacey wingers.

Eguavoen should instruct his wingers, such as Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze, to exploit these weaknesses with swift counter-attacks and precise crosses into the box.

This could lead to scoring opportunities for Osimhen or whoever the starting striker will be for the game.

4. Maintain Possession and Control

Nigeria must dominate possession and control the tempo of the game to prevent Rwanda from gaining momentum.

Eguavoen should instruct his midfielders, including Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, to dictate the flow of the game, using their vision and passing range to create scoring opportunities.

5. Avoid Complacency

With qualification already secured, Nigeria may be tempted to take their foot off the pedal.

However, Eguavoen must emphasize the importance of maintaining focus and intensity throughout the match.

Complacency could lead to a shock defeat. Eguavoen must ensure his players remain motivated and committed to securing a convincing victory.
