Super Eagles watch: Nwakali scores on full League One debut; Osho opens Auxerre account; Tella assists
Published: December 14, 20242015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner, Kelechi Nwakali scored his first goal in English football as Barnsley came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Exeter City in a League One clash held at St James Park on Saturday.
After making four appearances off the bench, the summer signing from GD Chaves was handed his full League One debut against the Grecians.
Thirteen minutes into the contest, Josh Magennis broke the deadlock, drilling a shot that beat the Barnsley goalkeeper via a slight deflection.
Three minutes into the second half, Nwakali celebrated opening his goalscoring account, helping to inspire a comeback for Barnsley.
The Super Eagles midfielder netted his first goal in style, firing the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area on the half-volley after a bouncing ball fell to him
With 88.3 percent of the vote from Barnsley fans, Nwakali was selected as the club's Player of the Match.
In the French Ligue 1, two-cap Nigeria international Gabriel Osho rescued a point for Auxerre as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Lens at Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps.
The former Reading youth team skipper scored with a header inside the six-yard box, directing a cross from Lassine Sinayoko into the bottom left corner to level the score at 2-2 in the 73rd minute.
The central defender logged 988 minutes over twelve matches before scoring his first goal for Auxerre, whom he joined in the summer transfer window after Luton Town's relegation to the Championship.
Elsewhere, Nathan Tella bagged an assist as Bayer Leverkusen secured their seventh consecutive win in all competitions, beating Augsburg 2-0 in a Bundesliga match at the WWK Arena.
After Martin Terrier's 14th-minute opener, Tella was involved in Bayer Leverkusen's second goal, setting up Florian Wirtz in the 40th minute.
Tella picked out Wirtz, who then struck the ball into the far corner from inside the box to double the lead.
With the victory, Bayer Leverkusen equaled Bayern Munich's record of going unbeaten in a whole calendar year in the Bundesliga.
