Middlesbrough new boy Iheanacho names Leicester, Man City and Chelsea legends as career influences

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has paid tribute to some of the biggest influences on his career, naming Leicester City great Jamie Vardy, Manchester City icon Yaya Touré and Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi among those who have played a significant role in his development.

Speaking to Middlesbrough's media team, Iheanacho reflected on the players and managers who have helped shape his career, acknowledging a long list of individuals who have guided him both at club level and on the international stage.

"Biggest influence on my career? There is quite a couple. So many people helped me throughout my career, obviously, managers as well, [Manuel] Pellegrini, Brendan Rodgers, Pep Guardiola. Players as well Clichy, Kompany, Yaya Toure, obviously, Jamie Vardy as well," Iheanacho said.

"There is a lot to be mentioned. A lot of people have helped me throughout my career even in the [Nigerian] national team as well, John Mikel Obi, so many coaches have helped me as well, so that’s them."

The 28-year-old forward began his professional journey at Manchester City, where he worked under Pellegrini and Guardiola.

His time at the Etihad Stadium saw him play alongside experienced players such as Gaël Clichy, Vincent Kompany, and Yaya Touré, all of whom he credits for helping him develop in his early years.

A move to Leicester City in 2017 provided Iheanacho with another valuable mentor in Jamie Vardy.

The duo formed a strong partnership in attack, with Iheanacho learning from Vardy’s relentless work ethic and clinical finishing.

Under the management of Brendan Rodgers, the Nigerian striker enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2020-21, scoring crucial goals to help Leicester win their first-ever FA Cup.

On the international front, Iheanacho highlighted the influence of John Mikel Obi, a former Chelsea midfielder who captained Nigeria for many years.

Mikel, who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, was a key figure in the Super Eagles squad during Iheanacho’s early years with the team.

His leadership and experience provided guidance to the younger players, including Iheanacho, who has since gone on to become a regular in the national team.

Now on loan at Middlesbrough from Sevilla, Iheanacho is looking to make an impact in the EFL Championship.

His reflections on his career so far underscore the importance of mentorship and learning from experienced figures in the game.

As he continues his football journey, the Nigerian forward remains grateful to those who have played a role in his success.
