History-maker: Nigerian midfielder becomes first footballer to kick a ball at Everton's new stadium

Nigerian midfielder Ademide Akarakiri made history on Monday night by becoming the very first footballer to kick a ball in a game at Everton's new stadium.

Akarakiri joined the Toffees from Arsenal in the summer of 2024, signing a two-year scholarship deal and was promoted to the U18 squad on a permanent basis.

The Hale End Academy product was named in the starting lineup as Everton U18s took part in the inaugural test event at Everton's new stadium, playing a friendly match against Wigan Athletic U18s before a crowd of 10,000 fans.

Apart from Akarakiri, two other Nigerian players, goalkeeper Gospel Eze and Malik Olayiwola, were named in Everton's matchday squad to face Wigan Athletic.

The young Everton players received a fabulous reception from the 10,000 fans - a fifth of the amount of people the club can get into the stadium.

The Latics defeated Everton 2-1, with Harrison Rimmer and Cole Simms getting on the scoresheet while Ray Robert netted a late consolation for the home team.

Akarakiri transferred to Everton after spending ten years at Arsenal and describes running with the ball as his best attribute, along with his passing range.

The 16-year-old has cited Amadou Onana, Paul Pogba and Andres Iniesta as his footballing idols.

This season, he has represented Everton in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup.
