Five dual-national midfielders Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle must convince to play for Nigeria

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle is preparing for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

The Malian tactician had recently toured Europe to familiarize himself with foreign-based professionals and scout players who could strengthen the squad.

Despite Nigeria's depth of talent in several positions, the Eagles need reinforcements in the midfield.

Additional midfield options would give Chelle tactical flexibility to approach games in different ways.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five dual-national midfielders who Chelle should convince to commit to Nigeria and improve the Eagles' squad.

Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal)

The Arsenal youngster is eligible to represent England and Nigeria through his parent.

Nwaneri has been phenomenal for the Gunners this season across all competitions.

Despite his young age, he has adapted well to senior football, especially amid injuries to key players.

The Nigerian-eligible midfielder has impressed Arsenal fans with his creativity, skill, football intelligence, and versatility.

He has scored seven goals and provided one assists in 24 matches across all competitions.

If he chooses Nigeria over England, Nwaneri would significantly bolster the Eagles' midfield by adding creativity and providing goal-scoring opportunities for the attacking unit.

Faustino Anjorin (Empoli)

Another impressive Nigerian-eligible midfielder making waves in Europe.

Anjorin, a Chelsea academy graduate, has been instrumental for Empoli in Serie A. He has registered three assists in 17 league matches.

However, it is his versatility, calmness, and composure in midfield that stand out.

Anjorin could bring a different profile to the Eagles, reminiscent of former captain John Obi Mikel.

Tim Iroegbunam (Everton)

Despite playing for England at youth level, Iroegbunam remains eligible for Nigeria at the senior level.

The 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a resurgence under David Moyes, playing a key role as Everton battles relegation.

Iroegbunam is a tactically astute deep-lying playmaker, comfortable in possession even under pressure.

His presence would add depth to the Eagles' midfield and provide competition for Wilfred Ndidi.

Lesley Ugochukwu (Chelsea, on loan to Southampton)

The Chelsea-owned midfielder, currently on loan at Southampton, is a strong defensive presence who could add stability to Nigeria’s midfield.

Ugochukwu has showcased his readiness to compete at the top level with Southampton and has been likened to Paul Pogba.

His addition to the Eagles' midfield would bring dynamism and excitement—something that has been missing since the retirement of Austin Jay-Jay Okocha.

Carney Chukwuemeka (Chelsea, on loan to Borussia Dortmund)

After struggling for game time at Chelsea, Chukwuemeka secured a loan move to Borussia Dortmund in the winter transfer market.

Known for his skills, creativity, and goal-scoring ability, he could provide an attacking spark in the Eagles’ midfield.

With these players in the squad, Nigeria would have greater midfield depth and more tactical options as they aim for a successful World Cup qualifying campaign.
