Super Falcons forward Payne opens Everton account with goal against Arsenal

Super Falcons forward Toni Payne scored her first goal for Everton in their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League at Walton Hall Park on Friday night.

Despite the loss, Payne’s strike was a key moment as she opened her account for the Toffees.

Payne joined Everton Women in July 2024, signing a deal with the WSL side after a six-year spell with Spanish club Sevilla.

The Nigerian international has been settling into her new surroundings, and her first goal for the club highlighted her growing influence in the team.

Arsenal took the lead in the 24th minute when Alessia Russo fired past Courtney Brosnan at the near post after connecting with a low cross from Kim Little.

However, Everton responded well, and Payne found the equalizer in the 36th minute.

The Nigerian reacted quickly to a deflected shot inside the box, slamming the ball past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

Her goal was the result of relentless pressing from Katja Snoeijs, who won possession and set up Kelly Gago down the right flank.

Gago’s pass into the box deflected into Payne’s path, and she made no mistake with the finish.

Everton continued to battle hard, with Brosnan making crucial saves to deny Arsenal early in the second half.

However, the visitors regained the lead in the 63rd minute when a dangerous cross from Emily Fox deflected off Martina Fernandez and rolled into the net.

With Everton pushing for another equalizer, Russo sealed the victory for Arsenal in stoppage time. The England forward latched onto a through ball, rounded Brosnan, and finished into the empty net to secure her brace.

Despite the defeat, Payne’s performance was a positive takeaway for Everton, as she continues to adapt to life in the WSL.

The Toffees will now turn their focus to their next match against Crystal Palace at Walton Hall Park on March 22.
