Snubbed Super Eagles striker Onuachu nets consolation for Southampton in loss to Wolves

Paul Onuachu was on target for Southampton in their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the St Mary's Stadium, scoring a late rebound to give his side hope of a comeback.

The Nigerian striker reacted quickly after Tyler Dibling's shot hit the post, tapping home to reduce the deficit in the 75th minute.

A brace from Jørgen Strand Larsen saw Wolves establish a two-goal lead two minutes into the second half.

However, despite his goal-scoring contribution, Onuachu has been left out of Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Onuachu was initially included in the 39-man provisional list released by Eric Chelle, but was not named in the final squad.

His omission does not come as a surprise, given his limited involvement with the Super Eagles in recent years.

Despite his imposing height and goal-scoring ability, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular for Nigeria, with other forwards often preferred.

With the Super Eagles set to continue their World Cup qualifying campaign, Eguavoen has opted for a squad he believes best suits his approach.

Nigeria will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the coming weeks, aiming to revive their dream of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Onuachu, meanwhile, will look to maintain his form for Southampton in the hope of earning a recall for future international fixtures.
