'Eric Chelle has given us instructions' - Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong discusses Rwanda clash

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has cautioned against underestimating Rwanda ahead of Friday's crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Kigali.

The central defender acknowledged that the Amavubi have been tough opponents for Nigeria in recent meetings and emphasized the importance of securing maximum points to revive their World Cup qualification hopes.

Speaking to NFF TV, Troost-Ekong praised new head coach Eric Chelle for his detailed preparations and tactical approach.

The Malian tactician, who recently took charge of the Super Eagles, has reportedly provided the squad with crucial insights to ensure they secure victory at the Amahoro Stadium.

"He (Eric Chelle) has given us a lot of instructions. For us, just make sure to understand what he wants from us on Friday and where we are working towards," Ekong said.

"These are the key moments when you have to stand up but none of us is afraid of that like I said this pressure is a priviledge for all of us."

Nigeria has struggled against Rwanda in recent encounters, failing to secure a win in their last two meetings during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw in Kigali before suffering a 2-1 defeat in Uyo.

Currently fifth in the standings with three points, Nigeria faces the risk of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Troost-Ekong also shared insights into the atmosphere in camp, revealing that all players participated in Wednesday's training session and are eager to work with the new coach.

"So everything has been good. First training session, all the boys in camp and we are fired up," he added.

"Of course, we know we have a big job ahead. You know it comes with pressure but I keep saying to everyone that this pressure is a privilege, so all the boys are feeling that, we are very happy to work with the new coach.

The former Watford defender highlighted Chelle's tactical clarity and the importance of breaking down the game into achievable objectives.

"You know it's always special when I'm here. Whenever I have this badge on my chest, I am very happy. Being with the new coach, we're trying the best to welcome him as quick as possible.

"He has been very clear, what he wants from us and also what he is expecting and from us to understand and do the job.

"Like I said, I am very happy that he is here and he has given us a lot of information already and we are looking forward to the game on Friday.

"We try to break it down into things that we can actually achieve. Objectives and I think if you play to the occasion you are going to get lost in it.

"So we're trying to prepare for the game and be very objective on how we approach it. What we need to do to focus on Rwanda.

"Of course, we have to respect them for their position on the table. And I think we understand what they want to do.

"They have a new coach as well. A very loaded match but we just have to break it down and focus on the things that we have to control."

Nigeria will take on Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium on Friday, with Chelle aiming to begin his tenure with a positive result.

A victory would be a significant step towards getting their qualification campaign back on track.
