Warning signs: Five key reasons the Super Eagles could struggle against Rwanda in 2026 WCQ

As Nigeria prepares to face Rwanda in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday, concerns are mounting over the Super Eagles' ability to secure a much-needed victory. Despite their superior squad on paper, several factors suggest that Eric Chelle’s side could struggle against the Wasps at the Amahoro Stadium. 

Here are five key reasons why Nigeria may face difficulties in Kigali.

1. Poor Form in World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria has endured a woeful start to their qualification campaign, failing to win any of their opening four matches. 

The Super Eagles have drawn three games and lost one, placing them second-bottom in Group C with just three points.

Their lack of victories so far has put them in a difficult position, and the pressure to turn things around could weigh heavily on the team. 

Meanwhile, Rwanda sits joint top of the group and will be full of confidence heading into this match.

2. Struggles Against Rwanda in Recent Meetings

Despite Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s footballing powerhouses, they have struggled against Rwanda in recent encounters. 

The Super Eagles have failed to win any of their last three matches against the Wasps, including a disappointing 2-1 home defeat in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November 2024. 

This poor record against the Wasps could affect their confidence, while Rwanda will see this as an opportunity to maintain their strong form.

3. Tough Playing Conditions in Kigali

The Amahoro Stadium in Kigali presents a unique challenge for visiting teams due to its artificial turf, which is vastly different from the natural grass pitches Nigerian players are accustomed to. 

The bounce and movement of the ball on artificial surfaces require adjustments that could disrupt Nigeria’s passing game. 

Additionally, Rwanda’s players are more familiar with the conditions and could use this to their advantage, making life difficult for the Super Eagles.

4. Defensive Vulnerabilities

Nigeria’s defensive struggles have been a major concern in recent games. Despite having experienced defenders like William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, the team has looked shaky at the back, conceding in every qualifier so far.

Rwanda, though not the most prolific attacking side, has shown the ability to capitalize on defensive errors. If Nigeria fails to tighten up their backline, they could find themselves punished once again.

5. Pressure and Uncertainty Under New Management

The appointment of Eric Chelle as Nigeria’s head coach has brought a sense of uncertainty, with some fans and pundits questioning his ability to turn the team’s fortunes around.
