Published: May 07, 2013
It would be 50 years this year that the team that won the first continental laurel for Nigeria was established.
Some players that have passed through the club at one stage or the other have now come under the auspices of Ex-Shooting
Stars Players Association and have finalized plan to throw a big celebration.
In a press briefing in Ibadan that had in attendance members of the first generations of players of the club, Chief Niyi Omowon, Engr. Eddy Ayoola, Chairman project planning committee, both 1963 to 67 set and Idowu Otubusen popularly known as Slow Poison who his a member of 1972 to 77 set of the team told the press all the activities lined-up for the golden celebration.
Part of the scheduled action plan of the association is befitting remembrances of the late pillar of the club, Chief Lekan Salami that passed on in 1987 and the first captain of the Club, Jide Johnson that died on 20th November 1986 and who was noted for scoring a corner directly in his playing days, even before the Pele of Brazil.
The other event is a launching of 500 million Naira endowment fund which would be solely spent on the welfare of the ex-3SC players, according to the secretary of the association, Femi Okenla who said “the core value of this noble association is welfare of ex-players of the club.
“It was Shooting Stars that complement the metamorphoses in Nigerian football history, graduating from Western Nigerian Development Corporation (WNDC) to Industrial Investment and Credit Corporations (IICC) and now to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), and that is why the association would strive to be on good footing so that we can be there for our members all the time”, Okenla former Oyo SWAN boss noted.
And in appreciation of the efforts committed so far to the development of the club, the association also planned to be organizing an annual merit award for individuals and corporate bodies who have contributed to the growth of the traditional club.
