Super Eagles to field new captain for blockbuster Afcon semifinal showdown against Morocco

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final with a new captain leading the team following Wilfred Ndidi's suspension.

Ndidi, who received his second yellow card of the knockout stage in the quarter-final against Algeria, is unavailable for selection due to the one-match ban.

In his absence, Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles’ assistant captain, will take charge on the field for the crucial semi-final showdown.

Osimhen, who has been instrumental in Nigeria’s run at Afcon 2025, will lead the squad as they aim to maintain their winning momentum and advance to the final.

Coach Eric Chelle is expected to appoint Raphael Onyedika as Ndidi’s midfield replacement, ensuring that Nigeria maintains balance and control in the center of the park.

Other players, including Frank Onyeka and Calvin Bassey, avoided additional bookings in the quarter-final and remain available for selection, while the fitness of right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel will be assessed after he limped off in stoppage time.

As Nigeria prepares for the semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday night, Osimhen’s role as on-field captain will be vital in organizing the team and guiding the players through a high-pressure encounter against the host nation.

With Ndidi suspended, the Super Eagles will rely on Osimhen’s experience and leadership to inspire the squad, maintain their unbeaten record, and secure a place in the Afcon 2025 final.
