Former Werder Bremen captain Max Kruse has launched a stinging critique of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, accusing him of lacking commitment after returning to training overweight following a lengthy injury layoff.
Boniface, currently on loan at Werder Bremen, has endured a difficult campaign plagued by injuries and inconsistent form.
The 25-year-old had been sidelined with a knee injury initially feared to rule him out for the remainder of the season, but he recently resumed training, raising hopes he could still contribute in the club's battle to avoid relegation.
However, concerns over his physical condition have cast doubt on his immediate availability, with the forward expected to miss upcoming fixtures against RB Leipzig.
Reacting to the development, Kruse did not hold back, suggesting the striker may not be taking his career seriously despite his evident talent.
Speaking on the Flatterball Podcast via Bild, the former Germany international lamented Boniface's situation, noting that returning out of shape after injury reflects poorly on his professionalism.
"I think he's already given up on his career. He actually still has his best years ahead of him," Kruse said. "That's a real shame, because he has such great potential."
He further stressed that shedding significant weight within a short period is unrealistic, warning that such setbacks could hinder Boniface's long-term progress.
"I eventually realized that it doesn't work if you say overnight, 'I'm just going to lose 10 to 15 kilos with four weeks of training," he added.
Meanwhile, head coach Daniel Thioune has indicated that Boniface could make his return later in the season, potentially featuring against Cologne or Hamburg.
Despite the optimism, the Nigerian international is expected to play a limited role, likely coming off the bench as he works toward regaining full fitness before the campaign concludes.
