Through official channels, Qatar Stars League club Al Ahli SC have announced the signing of former Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong.
The central defender has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Al Ahli SC after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Kholood, who he captained in every match he started this season.
Troost-Ekong departs Al-Kholood after scoring two goals in 49 all-competition appearances.
The Tottenham Hotspur academy product has been brought in as replacement for Croatian defender Matej Mitrović, who suffered an injury that ended his season.
According to Elsport, the leadership of Al-Kholood informed Troost-Ekong that they do not need his services, paving the way for him to leave the team during the January transfer window.
This unexpected move comes despite assurances from Al-Kholood manager Des Buckingham regarding the player's importance to the team as captain and his wealth of experience.
However, the club’s desire to cut costs, given the player’s high monthly salary, is believed to be the main reason for his departure.
Troost-Ekong was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was included in the Super Eagles' provisional squad for this year's edition, but called time on his international career few weeks before the start of the tournament in Morocco.
The 32-year-old has worn the colours of Groningen, Dordrecht, KAA Gent, Haugesund, Bursaspor, Udinese, Watford, Salernitana and PAOK in the past.
