Former Manchester City midfielder and African football icon, Yaya Touré, has described Nigeria's Super Eagles as the most impressive team at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Nigeria enjoyed a sensational campaign at the biennial competition, scoring 14 goals and conceding just four throughout the tournament. The Super Eagles were particularly solid in the knockout stages, where they did not concede a single goal.
Despite emerging as the tournament's most offensive side, Nigeria's quest for the title ended in the semi-finals after a narrow defeat to Morocco.
Reflecting on the tournament, Touré lauded Algeria's impressive display at the tournament before they were eventually knocked out by Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
"I've been seeing the Afcon, I've been there as well. I've been impressed with Algeria, unfortunately they get kicked out by Nigeria," Yaya Toure said to Bleacher Report Football.
He also acknowledged Morocco's tactical approach under head coach Walid Regragui, describing the host as "very pragmatic, very direct and playing counter-attack."
"I've been impressed about the team with Walid Regragui. The manager of Morocco, very pragmatic, very direct and playing counter-attack," he added.
However, Touré reserved his highest praise for the Super Eagles. The former Barcelona midfielder Touré praised Nigeria's style of play and overall performance, singling them out ahead of other strong contenders.
"I was impressed with Nigeria, Nigeria play good football. When you see the stats, they've been scoring more than usual goals. It feels like full attack, playing very good football," he said.
"The most impressive for me in my opinion was Nigeria - the football they were playing, the goals they were scoring. The players winning because the two best African players on their team."
"They played such wonderful games and get kicked out by Morocco in the semifinals."
Touré also mentioned other notable teams at the tournament, including Congo and Ivory Coast, describing the Ivorians as a young but promising side gaining valuable experience on the continental stage.
"Well, Congo was also good. They were kicked out by Algeria. Ivory Coast was a young team, at time a bit naive but it's part of the footballing experience," he said.
The Super Eagles claimed the bronze medal, edging Egypt 4-2 on penalties following a draw at the end of regulation time in the third-place playoff.
