Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has passed a vote of
confidence on the ability of the present Nigeria squad to attain
glorious heights, claiming that the Gernot Rohr-led side can do more
than the original Dream Team that won the 1996 Olympic Football
Tournament in Atlanta.
Papilo stated this at the
'Walk with Kanu' event organized by the Kanu Heart Foundation to mark
the World Heart Day on Wednesday.
The
Super Eagles have in their ranks players on the books of top five
European Leagues' clubs including Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex
Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Ola Aina, Zaidu Sanusi and William Troost-Ekong.
Speaking to reporters including allnigeriasoccer.com, Kanu stated : "They can do more than us. The most important thing is for all of us to support them, they are doing well.
"They
have the best players who are playing outside here so we have to
believe in our own, for me the Super Eagles will keep on flying."
Kanu agreed that the Super Eagles should aspire to win trophies and urged the coaching staff to select the right players.
"When you say that you put pressure on them but the most important thing is we play to win trophies.
"They know they are all out to win the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup but it is step by step.
"If
you ask me if we have the best squad I will tell you yes. Look at where
our players are playing, they are doing well, so the most important
thing is left for their coaches to make sure they put the right people
where they are supposed to be and then push them.
"They can do
more than what they are doing because everybody is afraid of Nigeria.
Presently, if you call one, two, three, four players our players are
there."
Nigeria are topping their group in
2022 World Cup qualifying with six points from their first two games,
they face Central African Republic in back-to-back matches in October.
