Senegal star Sadio Mané once again demonstrated why he is revered not only in Africa but across the globe, following a tense moment in the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final clash with Morocco.
The drama unfolded in the 98th minute when Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty after Brahim Diaz went down in the box.
Frustrated by the decision and a previous disallowed goal by Abdoulaye Seck, the Senegal team initially decided to leave the field in protest.
However, Mané intervened, urging his teammates to return to the pitch to avoid potential sanctions.
The ensuing penalty, executed in a Panenka style by Diaz, was saved by Lions of Teranga goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, preserving the deadlock at 0-0.
While on commentary duty for CAF TV, former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh praised the Senegalese forward for his composure and leadership.
"This is why Sadio Mané is loved worldwide, because of his intelligence and the ability to stay calm," Oliseh said.
"This is a man who has been through a lot of challenges in his playing career. I think Sadio Mané is a hero; he’s an example that people should imitate. His teammates are coming back onto the pitch."
Oliseh further highlighted the importance of respecting the rules of the game.
"If the referee blows for a penalty, the rule states you have to respect the decision. Furthermore, the penalty has not been scored yet."
Senegal celebrated their second Africa Cup triumph following Pape Gueye's game-winning strike three minutes into extra time, with Mané recognised as the tournament’s best player.
