Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has expressed confidence and calm ahead of Nigeria’s much-anticipated Africa Cup of Nations opener against Tanzania on Tuesday.
The Trabzonspor striker has been in scintillating form this season, emerging as the joint top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig with 11 goals, a performance that earned him a recall to the national team.
Speaking on the team’s preparation, Onuachu emphasized the similarities between club and national team routines.
“Not much different from the trainers especially two days before the game. It's always the same routine, some light session, some set pieces and tactic before the game.
“I don't think there's any different preparation between the club and the national team,” he said.
The forward also addressed the heightened attention surrounding him and whether it has brought any additional pressure.
When asked if he feels any form of pressure given the media hype, Onuachu was clear: “I mean no, as a football player that's what it comes with. I mean a lot of people speak. So, I mean you know we are used to it.
“To be honest, I don't feel any kind of pressure. It's football, it's fans. When you do good they say good thing about you.
“So when you don't perform they try to push you to encourage you to perform. So, I mean I don't feel any pressure. I just have to keep doing what I know how to do best.”
The Super Eagles will be looking to start their Afcon campaign on a positive note, with Onuachu expected to play a pivotal role in leading the attack.
His experience in Europe and goal-scoring prowess add depth and confidence to the Nigerian squad, which is eager to make a strong impression in Morocco.
Nigeria’s opener against Tanzania is scheduled for Tuesday, and all eyes will be on Onuachu and the Super Eagles to see if they can translate their preparation and talent into a winning start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
