Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their final qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday.
The Falconets delivered a composed performance in front of their home supporters, taking control of the tie ahead of the decisive second leg in Lilongwe.
Nigeria dominated possession from the outset, dictating the tempo of the game and pinning Malawi back for large spells.
Despite their control, the hosts were unable to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes, with the first half ending goalless.
After the restart, Nigeria’s pressure eventually paid off. The breakthrough came via an unfortunate own goal from a Malawi defender, handing the Falconets a deserved lead after sustained attacking efforts.
Buoyed by the opener, the Falconets continued to push forward in search of a second goal to strengthen their advantage.
Their persistence was rewarded when Ifeanyi Kindness found the back of the net, calmly finishing to double Nigeria’s lead and put the hosts firmly in control of the contest.
Malawi struggled to cope with Nigeria’s attacking intensity throughout the second half, as the Falconets combined disciplined defending with purposeful forward play to maintain their grip on the match.
The 2-0 result provides Nigeria with a valuable cushion heading into the return leg, where they will look to complete the job and secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The second leg of the tie is scheduled to take place on May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where Malawi will attempt to overturn the deficit on home soil.
