'We are after somebody' - Sheffield United manager reacts to links with Nigeria's Afcon 2025 star

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has reacted to reports linking the club with Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, admitting the Blades are actively searching for reinforcements in the middle of the park ahead of the close of the January transfer window.

Onyeka has drawn interest from several clubs across Europe following his limited game time at Brentford this season.

The Nigerian international has made just nine appearances in all competitions, registering two assists, with only 88 minutes played in the Premier League and 244 minutes in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to journalists ahead of Sheffield United’s midweek fixture against Southampton, Wilder acknowledged his side’s midfield challenges and hinted at possible activity before the weekend clash against Ipswich Town.

"It's going to be a struggle for Wednesday now. We're working our way towards the weekend," Wilder was quoted as saying by Football League World

When pressed on the links with Onyeka, the Sheffield United boss remained cautious but confirmed the club’s intent to strengthen.

"Keep trying. We're after somebody in the middle of the park, so there's a list of players that are there, and some are on the spot and some are miles off. And as I said last week, we work incredibly hard to try and get them over the line. We're still working incredibly hard to improve," he added.

Onyeka further enhanced his reputation with an impressive performance for Nigeria at the AFCON tournament, playing a key role as the Super Eagles secured a bronze medal following their victory over Egypt in the third-place playoff.

His potential signing is viewed as a major boost to Sheffield United’s midfield as the Blades aim to push for promotion back to the Premier League next season.
