Werder Bremen chief confirms Agu nearing return after injury forced him to miss Afcon

SV Werder Bremen’s head of football, Clemens Fritz, has provided an update on the injury situation of Super Eagles fullback Felix Agu ahead of the club’s Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

Agu has been sidelined since October 2025 after sustaining an ankle injury, an issue that has ruled him out of 11 Bundesliga matches for the Green-Whites.

The setback also forced the Nigerian international to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles went on to finish third following a playoff victory over Egypt.

Fritz revealed that Agu is edging closer to a return, although the club remains cautious as they continue to monitor his recovery.

He explained that Agu’s fitness situation is also being factored into Werder Bremen’s decision-making in the January transfer market.

“There’s nothing concrete regarding Olivier – moreover, his situation is similar to Julian’s. Isaac Schmidt is currently playing on the left and Felix Agu is also returning, but we have to wait and see how long he needs. Therefore, we’re waiting to see if and how we will act," Fritz told Deichstube,

Before picking up the injury, Agu was an important member of Horst Steffen’s squad, making seven appearances across all competitions.

His potential return is expected to provide a significant boost for Werder Bremen as they navigate the second half of the season.
