Werder Bremen coach confirms Agu's return to partial team training after muscle injury

Werder Bremen have received an encouraging boost with defender Felix Agu making steady progress in his recovery from a muscular injury, raising hopes of a return before the end of the Bundesliga season run-in.

The 26-year-old fullback, who has missed the last three matches after picking up the issue in mid-April, was back on the training pitch on Sunday, taking part in the early phases of a partially integrated session with the first-team squad.

Head coach Daniel Thioune confirmed the positive development while speaking to DeichStube, via Liga Insider, highlighting the cautious but optimistic approach being taken with the player’s rehabilitation.

“Felix is participating in training today on a partially integrated basis,” head coach Daniel Thioune confirmed, acknowledging the player's progress.

Thioune also struck an upbeat tone regarding Agu’s potential availability in the coming days, suggesting the defender could yet return to the squad setup ahead of a crucial fixture.

“I’m positive that we’ll have another player available by the end of the week,” the coach said.

While Agu’s involvement in Werder Bremen’s upcoming away clash against TSG Hoffenheim has not been ruled out, the coaching staff are expected to make a late decision based on his response to training intensity over the next few days.

A starting role, however, is considered unlikely given his recent absence and the strong performances of Olivier Deman, who has impressed in the left-sided role during Agu’s absence.

The club’s medical and coaching teams are continuing to monitor his workload carefully, prioritising full recovery over rushed reintegration.

Agu’s return to partial training is nevertheless viewed as a significant step forward, particularly as Werder Bremen aim to maintain stability and momentum in the final stretch of the campaign.

Further assessments are expected ahead of matchday, with the final squad decision to be made closer to kickoff.
