Confirmed: Super Eagles goalkeeper Nwabali departs Chippa United after Afcon heroics

South African Premiership side Chippa United have confirmed the departure of Nigerian international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali following his impressive displays for the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.

Nwabali was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the biennial competition, playing a key role in the Super Eagles’ campaign.

His heroics included saving two penalties in the third-place playoff against Egypt, a performance that helped Nigeria secure the bronze medal.

His standout performances at the AFCON, coupled with his contract situation, have sparked speculation about his future at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper’s contract is set to expire this summer, making him eligible to negotiate and sign with any club as a free agent.

However, those talks were put to rest on Thursday morning after Chippa United confirmed that the goalkeeper had formally requested to leave the club.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Chilli Boys announced that management had granted Nwabali’s request after careful consideration.

“Chippa United FC confirms that Stanley Nwabali has formally submitted a request to depart the club," the statement read.

"After careful consideration, the club has agreed to grant his release. We would like to thank Stanley for the years of service, commitment and professionalism he has shown during his time at Chippa United."

The Chilli Boys also paid tribute to the Nigerian shot-stopper’s contribution during his stay at the club and wished him well in the next phase of his career.

"His contribution to the club will always be appreciated. The club wishes Stanley every success in the next chapter of his career and all future endeavours,” the statement added.

Nwabali joined Chippa United in 2022 from Nigerian side Katsina United and went on to establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
