Bundesliga club Werder Bremen have expressed a clear intention to extend the contract of Felix Agu following his contributions since joining the club.
Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, confirmed that the club are keen to secure the long-term future of the Nigerian left-back, whose current deal is set to run until 2027.
Agu, who arrived at the club in 2020, will effectively enter the final year of his contract by the end of next season, prompting the club to act early in order to avoid uncertainty over his future.
Speaking to German outlet DeichStube, Niemeyer highlighted Agu’s value within the squad and hinted strongly at an extension.
"Felix is highly valued by both the coaching staff and the sporting management," he said. "Therefore, we can well imagine extending his contract."
He further revealed that initial discussions have already taken place, with both parties expected to advance negotiations in the coming weeks.
"We've already had an initial exchange in which we signaled our interest to him. Things will move to the next stage soon."
Since his arrival at the Weserstadion, Agu has developed into a dependable option for Bremen, making 109 appearances across all competitions, while contributing five goals and nine assists.
However, the Super Eagles defender has endured a challenging campaign, with injuries and inconsistent form limiting his overall impact this season.
Agu has made 11 league appearances this season, registering just one assist, as the club continues its fight to avoid relegation.
