Rangers star Emmanuel Fernandez has spoken of his pride after earning a call-up to Nigeria's Super Eagles for the March internationals against Iran and Jordan.
Born in London twenty-four years ago, the central defender qualifies to represent the three-time African champions through his Nigerian parents.
Fernandez recently linked up with the Super Eagles squad for their international friendlies and went on to make his first senior appearance in the team’s 2-1 victory over Iran in Antalya, Türkiye.
The match marked a significant milestone in Fernandez’s career, as he officially began his journey on the international stage.
Speaking to Rangers TV before reporting for international duty, Fernandez highlighted the emotional connection behind his decision to represent Nigeria.
He emphasized that playing for the West African nation has always been a personal goal shaped by his heritage and upbringing.
“It’s my home nation, it’s where my family is from, it’s where I am from,” Fernandez said, emphasizing the importance of the opportunity. “It’s something that I have always wanted to happen.”
The former Peterborough United defender also addressed doubts that may have surrounded his journey to international football, insisting that self-belief played a crucial role in reaching this stage of his career.
“People probably thought I couldn’t have got there. And I always had faith in myself that I would get there,” he stated.
Fernandez further reflected on the pride his call-up has brought to his loved ones, expressing gratitude for the chance to represent the Super Eagles on the global stage.
“I know my family are proud. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I can’t want for it to happen,” he added.
His debut performance in the win over Iran offered a glimpse of his potential value to the Nigerian squad, particularly as the team continues to strengthen its defensive options ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Known for his physical presence, composure, and aerial ability, Fernandez is expected to provide added depth and competition within the backline.
