UCL: Former NFF chief Pinnick suggests he was rooting for Arsenal over Lookman's Atletico

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has publicly expressed strong support for Arsenal following their qualification for the UEFA Champions League final, while appearing to place personal sentiment above the presence of Nigeria international Ademola Lookman at Atletico Madrid.

Pinnick, who is a well-known football administrator, shared his reaction on his official Instagram page after Arsenal secured their place in the final.

His comments highlighted both emotional attachment to the English club and a personal historical connection to European football.

In his post, Pinnick wrote: “Congratulations to the Gunners Arsenal for the grand entry into the finals of the UCL. 20 years ago, I watched live in Paris, with bitter memories, as we lost to Barcelona with 10 men.”

He further expressed optimism that Mikel Arteta’s side could go all the way in the competition, adding: “I pray and hope Arsenal lifts this coveted trophy this time around.By His Grace, I will be in Budapest to watch the finals, thanks to my dear friend, Aleksander Čeferin, the UEFA President, who extended an invitation to me on my request.”

Pinnick also reflected on a recent domestic experience involving Arsenal, describing a personal moment shared with family.

He said: “It was also a great delight to witness Arsenal's triumph over Fulham with my son, who was privileged to meet two Arsenal legends, Aaron Ramsey and Per Mertesacker, making the moment even more special, as the victory secured our position at the top of the league. A lifelong supporter of Arsenal and a grateful Platinum Seats member.”

His comments have drawn attention given Arsenal’s Champions League run coinciding with Atletico Madrid’s campaign, where Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has also featured.

While Pinnick did not directly reference Lookman in his statement, his strong emotional alignment with Arsenal has been interpreted by some observers as a preference for the Premier League club over Atletico Madrid’s ambitions.

Arsenal’s progress to the Champions League final marks a significant moment for the club as they chase their first title in the competition, with Pinnick among several high-profile figures expressing public anticipation ahead of the showpiece event.
