English journalist David Maddock has criticized Everton for paying over the odds to sign Nigeria international Alex Iwobi in the summer transfer window.
The winger cum playmaker became the most expensive Nigerian player in history after completing his move to The Toffees on transfer deadline day, ending a 15-year association with Arsenal in the process.
Iwobi's move to Goodison Park has not really been successful, with Everton languishing in 18th position in the Premier League table.
One of the key figures that convinced the Super Eagles star to join Everton, Marco Silva was relieved of his duties after the recent 5-2 defeat suffered at the hands of Liverpool.
Writing in the Mirror UK, Maddock said : ''And though Marcel Brands looks far more suited to the role, his signings also contributed to the axe falling on Marco Silva.
''Paying £30m-plus for Alex Iwobi looked a panic buy in the summer, and looks even more suspect now.''
Iwobi has not scored or assisted a goal since September 24, 2019 when he set up Everton's second goal scored by Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.
