Danish-born Nigerian forward Chido Obi maintained his rich vein of form on Sunday, scoring as Manchester United defeated Sunderland 3-2 in the Premier League 2 playoffs to book a place in the quarterfinals.
Nine days ago, the Denmark U21 international delivered a decisive performance in Manchester United’s 2–1 FA Youth Cup semi-final victory against Crystal Palace, contributing a goal and an assist.
This season, Obi has added creativity to his game, tallying six assists in total, including an impressive streak of three in successive matches against Borussia Dortmund, Sporting CP and Real Madrid in the Premier League International Cup.
Against the Black Cats, Obi gave United the lead in the 15th minute when he slotted into the bottom left hand comer.
Jack Fletcher doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 27th minute, before Felix Scott reduced the deficit three minutes later.
After the restart, Manchester United added a third in the 57th minute through Shea Lacey, but Jack Whittaker responded in the 73rd minute to ensure a tense finish.
Although Obi has eight appearances for United's first team, he has not featured for the side in a competitive game since the final day of the 2024-2025 Premier League season.
