Huddersfield release five players of Nigerian descent including forward named in 2023 AFCON squad
Published: May 17, 2024Through a statement on their official website, Huddersfield Town have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.
The Terriers have released several players including five Nigeria-eligible players in the shape of versatile forward Charles Ondo, Mustapha Olagunju, David Adewoju, Hazeem Bakre and Aaron Ojungu.
Madrid-born Charles Ondo was named in Equatrial Guinea's squad to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was a non-playing substitute in all their matches including a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles.
The 20-year-old has three caps for Equatorial Guinea but remains eligible to represent Nigeria as he is an U21 player.
Signed as a scholar in the summer of 2020, Ondo made two senior appearances for Huddersfield Town and was loaned out to Irish club Waterford FC in the second half of the 2022-2023 campaign to gain first team experience.
Mustapha, who is the elder brother of Chelsea center back Saheed Olagunju,. joined Huddersfield Town at U17 level, rising through the youth team ranks to make his first team debut against Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Cup in January 2021.
The 22-year-old took in loan spells at Tadcaster Albion, Welling United, Port Vale, Ebbsfleet United and Crawley Town between 2020 and 2024.
David Adewoju, Hazeem Bakre and Aaron Ojungu are set to depart Huddersfield Town upon the expiry of their contracts on June 30 without making their first team debuts.
