Arsenal U21 captain of Nigerian descent wanted by FC Zurich as contract talks stall
Published: December 24, 2024Swiss Super League side FC Zurich have expressed interest in signing Arsenal U21 captain of Nigerian descent, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji ahead of the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
The 21-year-old has been in scintillating form for Arsenal in the Premier League 2, despite the team's struggles in the league this season.
Butler-Oyedeji has been a standout performer, scoring seven goals and registering six assists in just nine matches. His impressive output has not gone unnoticed, with FC Zurich among several European clubs monitoring his development.
The Swiss club is said to be keen on bolstering their attacking options and is preparing to make an approach in January.
Arsenal, however, are eager to retain the Hale End graduate and have reportedly offered him a new contract, but negotiations have stalled, leaving the door open for potential suitors to swoop in.
The Gunners will be wary of losing another top academy talent after Chido-Obi Martins departed for Manchester United in the summer.
Butler-Oyedeji's departure would be a significant blow, given his remarkable form for the U21s and his pre-season contributions.
Despite his strong performances, the young forward has yet to make a first-team appearance for Arsenal this season.
While he has been included on the bench for Premier League and Champions League matches, he has not featured on the pitch, potentially fueling speculation about his future at the club.
Butler-Oyedeji has already gained senior experience through loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town in the English Football League.
His readiness to compete at a higher level has reportedly caught the attention of FC Zurich, who see him as a valuable addition to their squad.
