Ex-Man City star Onuoha gives two reasons Barcelona want to sign Man Utd striker Rashford
Published: January 28, 2025Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has outlined two key reasons why Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United during the winter transfer window.
Onuoha, speaking on ESPN, analyzed Rashford's current situation and explained that Barcelona’s interest in the England international is driven by both a market opportunity and his desire to prove a point.
Rashford has found himself frequently omitted from Manchester United’s squad under the management of Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim.
Amorim has publicly questioned Rashford’s commitment and demanded an improvement in his attitude during training, creating tension and fueling speculation about the player’s future.
The situation has prompted several top European clubs, including Barcelona, to monitor Rashford’s situation.
Despite links to a move to Saudi Arabia, Italy and Turkey, Rashford has reportedly expressed a preference for a fresh start in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Onuoha believes that a move away from Manchester United could help relieve the pressure on Rashford, suggesting that without the weight of being a United academy graduate and a previous 30-goal scorer, he would have the chance to rebuild his career from scratch.
"We have been questioning Manchester United's culture for a long time. I respect it from Amorim and for Rashford, him having to potentially go somewhere else, where he'll have to start afresh,” Onuoha said.
"And if he goes somewhere new and he doesn't have that history, he's not the United Academy graduate, he's not the guy that scored thirty goals two seasons ago, he would have to build from the ground up.”
Onuoha also noted that Barcelona and other clubs might see Rashford as an affordable option in the current market, with the player needing to prove himself at a new club.
"These clubs that are interested maybe they know he has a point to prove now and maybe the price would be lower, so yeah maybe he's an option. But also, Rashford has to get it right, because if he doesn't where does he go next?”
With the winter transfer window closing on February 3, it remains to be seen whether Rashford will make a move away from Old Trafford, potentially starting a new chapter in his career with Barcelona or another European giant.
