Nigerian defender Jordan Torunarigha was at the centre of a frightening injury scare on Saturday after a heavy mid-air collision with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Ansgar Knauff briefly brought Bundesliga action to a standstill at Deutsche Bank Park, according to a report by German television channel Sport1.
The incident unfolded in the 80th minute of Hamburg’s 2–1 victory, a match shaped by goals from Can Uzun for Frankfurt, before Albert Grønbæk and Fabio Vieira turned the game around for the visitors.
In a split second of aerial combat, both players rose to contest a high ball, but misjudged their timing, resulting in an accidental head-to-head collision that immediately changed the mood inside the stadium.
Torunarigha dropped to the turf and remained motionless, triggering instant alarm from players of both teams.
Arms waved frantically toward the touchline as teammates called for medical intervention.
Within moments, paramedics sprinted onto the pitch with a stretcher, while silence swept through large sections of the crowd.
The game itself faded into the background as attention fully shifted to the well-being of the Hamburg defender.
After several tense minutes of treatment, Torunarigha was carefully helped to his feet.
Though clearly dazed and unsteady, he was able to leave the pitch under his own power with support from the medical staff, prompting a wave of relief and applause from supporters in Frankfurt.
Encouragingly, Torunarigha was able to sit on the bench and follow the final minutes of the match, offering an early sign that the situation may not be as severe as initially feared, though further tests will determine his recovery timeline.
